MOURARIA (HISTORIC LISBON) | CASTLE AREA | MARTIM MONIZ (DOWNTOWN LISBON)

On November 1, 1755 a violent earthquake, followed by a fire destroyed the center of Lisbon. The Royal Palace, the House of India, palaces of the aristocracy, the new House of the Opera, works of art and royal treasures, were lost irremediably.

From the ruins of medieval Lisbon, this area was redesigned on a modern and functional scale, due largely to the will of a powerful minister of King José I, the Marquis de Pombal, who quickly ordered a reconstruction project.

Lisbon, after the earthquake, acquired the rigor of geometric grid design, on which buildings with an anti-seismic system are built. This system was nicknamed the "cage" as it consisted of crossed wooden beams on which the walls are erected. The construction was absolutely revolutionary because it used for the first time mass production techniques, with the standardization of certain elements: the windows, the balconies of the first floor, the steps and the tiled interior parts of buildings.

Here you will find monuments, museums, churches as well as belvederes and kiosks, local shops, restaurants and terraces that will make your visit unforgettable.
