The Neighbourhoods
MOURARIA (HISTORIC LISBON) | CASTLE AREA | MARTIM MONIZ (DOWNTOWN LISBON)

Mouraria is one of the most traditional districts of Lisbon. It was given this name after D. Afonso Henriques, the 1st king of Portugal, having conquered Lisbon to the Muslims, also known as Moors, confined them to this area of the city.

It consisted of alleys, vegetable gardens and houses almost always grouped around a small mosque.

From then until the present Mouraria is a Lisbon patchwork. In this labyrinth of alleys and cultures, what stands out is the simplicity with which everyone looks and greets. They all seem to be from the same family. It is a neighborhood of lives and paths crisscrossed.

Mouraria is also known as the birthplace of Fado *. In the 19th century Maria Severa Onofriana, who at this time was considered the sublime expression of Fado music, lived on one of the most emblematic streets of this neighborhood (rua do Capelão). The mythical fadista fell in love with a count and took the popular music to the aristocratic salons.

Other great names related to Fado lived in the neighborhood, such as Mariza, before moving to the world’s great stages.

People of over 50 nationalities live in Mouraria today, and although it is the most international district of Lisbon, it is still the most typical one.

* Song that in its essence, sings about feelings, heartbreak, the longing for someone who has left, the mundane and the conquests of life. After all, the encounters and mismatches of life are an endless theme of inspiration. In 2011, Fado as an urban song of Lisbon, an identity symbol of the city and country, was classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.
